SIRE DISAPPEARED INTO Miguela’s office. I hoofed it up the hill to The Manner to grab some more pills in case I wound up being in L.A. longer than anticipated. I had to be back for my trial on March seventeenth, which was dangerously close to the anniversary of Evelyn’s death. I wasn’t sure what I’d do for money while in L.A.

When I returned, he was still inside. It had been over an hour-and-a-half. The porch outside served as Miguela’s waiting area. No magazines, so I watched traffic and studied the government-grey industrial architecture of the courthouse.

Ten minutes later Sire exited. He looked less than thrilled. “Bad news?” I asked.

“Let’s sail off this rock.”

“Where we headed?” I asked.

“Best you don’t know.”

“I get that a lot.”
